The joy of having your first baby is priceless. You are in awe every time you look at your newborn. It’s the perfect thing in the world. But after two weeks, you notice that your baby looks like a teenager. Baby pimples are on face and you don’t know where they come from.

First of all, take a deep breath. It’s not a strange thing. Acne doesn’t always appear during adolescent. Babies experience them as well. It occurs commonly during the first few months of your newborn life, usually in the age of two to three weeks and almost affecting 40% of all newborns. The most important thing is you know several ways to cure baby acne.

What causes baby acne?

There are no specific reasons for how this neonatal acne can show up on your baby’s face. Expert says that hormones contribute to the development of baby acne. However, since newborns haven’t really developed hormones, the cause comes most likely from the mother’s or what is known as maternal hormones.

During pregnancy, mothers expose so many chemicals through the placenta into the baby’s bloodstream. This exposure can cause the baby to have some temporary conditions, including acne. Baby’s sluggish oil-producing glands are stimulated because of the maternal hormones, causing pimples to appear. Baby acne, also known as neonatal acne, can also be caused by milk, formula, or any substance that come in contact with the baby’s skin.

Baby acne is commonly found in the area of noses and cheeks, although it may appear anywhere else such as on the baby’s upper neck or back.

If you see your baby having one of those red pimples, don’t panic because it’s a common condition. Even though there is no special cure that you can use to remove baby acne, you can learn how to treat baby acne your own. Here are four tips that you can use help the little bumps disappear.

Clean the acne

The first thing you want to do to treat baby acne naturally is by cleaning your baby’s face. Wipe the area that has acne with plain and warm water. Do this gently and with full care. You can apply this once or twice a day. Don’t overdo it because baby skin is tender and soft. Cleaning it too often will also irritate your loved one’s face.

Don’t squeeze

Don’t try to pinch the acne because it will also irritate the baby’s skin or make the condition worse. Squeezing the acne can cause the bacteria inside them to pour out and instead of removing it, there will be more neonatal acne for you to deal with.

Keep it natural

Please keep in mind that you can’t use soap, cream, lotion, or any other cleansing product, especially adult-intended product in baby acne treatment. However, you may try a more natural solution such as using breast milk to clean the acne. It’s free and you always have it ready when you need it.

Don’t use rough fabrics

When cleaning the bumps, don’t use a washcloth, towel or clothing. Fabrics that have rough materials can rip open the bumps and cause infection. On the other hand, use your hands instead. But be sure to wash them first. Use very soft and baby-friendly material to dry your baby’s face. It’s so important to choose the right type of fabrics for your baby acne treatment.

Be patient

After you apply the tips above, you just have to wait patiently. Neonatal acne is not a disease that can harm your baby in the least. In fact, you can do nothing about it and wait for it to disappear on its own. You don’t have to go to the doctor to remove the acne unless it’s an extreme case and requires further treatments. Just be patient and make sure your baby stays healthy.

Infantile acne versus baby acne

If the acne shows up when your child is more than two months old, it could be a sign of infantile acne. Please note that infantile acne is different from neonatal acne. The condition is not as common as baby acne. It lasts longer than acne found in the newborn, which can be up to several months or even years.

Similar to neonatal acne, infantile acne usually disappear on its own. But it leaves a mark and sometimes causes scarring. Treating infantile acne is almost the same as how to treat baby acne. You can apply the tips above and wait for it to be gone.
