You might heard that a baby is vulnerable to desease and infection, including thrush. But, what exactly is thrush? What it looks like? Should I be worried if my baby having thrush?
What does thrush look like?
Thrush is commonly identified through cracked skin in the corner of the mouth or white patches but it can’t be wiped away. It is a yeast infection caused by candida albicans fungus. It is usually found in the tounge or around the mouth.
Oral thrush is copmmon in babies younger than six months old, and it causes different symptoms. Some babies might feel uncomfortable with the thrush causing pain when they suck in the breastfeeding process. But, some babies also do not show the discomfort.
What causes thrush?
Oral thrush is caused by candida albicans infections inside the mouth. Candida is normally found in human being inside the mouth and digestive tract in certain amount which would not cause any harm towards the body. In case of normal person, the imune system and good bacteria will keep the candida’s growth in check. But, for babies whose imune system is not yet functioned like adults the growth exceed the normal amount and cause the thrush. Oral thrush is also commonly found in elderly or chemotheraphy patient whose imune system is not functioned properly.
Is thrush contagious?
Candida albicans infection in your baby could also spread into mom’s nipple who breastfeed the baby. You are more likely to be infected with thrush if you are having cracked nipple or consuming antibiotics that reduces the amount of healthy bacteria in your body which makes you more vulnerable towards the infection.
Be aware of the infection symptoms since if you are infected and not being treated, the infection might happened back and forth between you and the baby. The symptoms commonly include pain, burning, or itching sensations, cracked, flaky, or sensitive nipples, and areola that is red or shiny.
How to get rid of baby thrush?
Consult your doctor if you find oral thrush symptoms in your baby. Oral thrush is commonly dissapear after two weeks, but sometimes it causes pain to your baby that make him/her having trouble to eat or drink. The doctors usually will give antibacteria drops for your baby to enhance the recovery.
Make sure to also check whether or not you are having nipple thrush. The treatment of nipple thrush and oral throush should be done hand in hand to prevent the infection to reoccur and go back and forth between you and your baby.
Natural remedies for thrush in babies
If you are not comfortable with medication or you want to enhance the recovery process for your baby, you could add natural remedies to the medication. Remember that natural remedies still contains certain chemicla that might not be suitable for your baby, it is better to consult your doctor first before add them to the medication.
The first alternative for oral thrush is yogurt. Yogurt contains lactobacilli; good bacteria that can help to get rid of the fungus in your baby’s mouth. Please consult with your doctor first whether your baby is ready to eat yogurt or not.
The second alternative is virgin coconut oil (VCO). VCO contains caprylic acid that could help to suppress the fungus that caused oral thrush.
Vitamin C is a good substance to fight oral thrush. Vitamin C will help to enhance imune system that will fight the infection it also help recovery process. All the suggested alternative, even though labelled as natural, contains certain chemical that might not be suitable for your baby. It is best to consult your doctor first before considering to use the alternative remedies.
